The story
Imagine you're on a space mission to search for intelligent life outside of planet Earth. The spaceship you're allocated to is full of experts, a sort of ark of renowned scientists, brilliant minds trying to do the unimaginable.
There were specialists of all areas of human knowledge represented - biologist, engineer, paleontologist, doctor, physicist, mathematician, psychologist, lawyer, economist, historian, philosopher... the list goes on.
Among the entire crew, only one person inside this spacecraft is not an expert in anything. Let’s call this person the nexialist - the curious, the dot connector, the diplomat. Those who do not have the answer to all questions, but know who to ask or where to search.
Whenever the crew encountered difficulties including situations that put their lives at risk, the nexialist played a key role. He solved the problem so that everyone could continue their journey.
Do you know what was his advantage? The answer is simple: his ability to connect information, adapt and solve problems. He faced problems differently because he was not an expert in anything. In fact, he gathered information and consulted with experts to make an impartial decision.
Today we are in a world where we carry thousands of years of knowledge in our pockets. We have access to massive collections of very famous libraries at our fingertips. We have now gained omniscience with the touch of a button. Have you ever thought about it?
We are all in a crowded spaceship surrounded by scientists. Most of them will say what we need to do to optimize our lives. But who does really decide? Who will bridge the gap between wish and action? It's all about attitude.
In the last six or seven decades, the world has moved towards an era of specialization. I admit the in-depth study has its advantages. But we lost nexus, purpose, the reason behind why we do things.
There was a lack of people who understood and accepted the fact that there are multiple ways to solve problems. We see the extremes of problems, but nothing is black and white. There are multiple shades of gray in between.
When you have an issue to solve and you're clueless of what to do, who do you think of? Who do you seek advice from? Who do you think will lead tomorrow’s economy?
In today’s rapidly changing world, the nature of work and careers is undergoing a profound transformation - marked by advanced technologies, intercultural work environments, and ever-shifting economic policies.
Understanding the evolving professional profiles and the type of ecosystems you are in are crucial in preparing for these changes.
Which professional profile are you? What unseen roles do you play in the organizations you're in or you work at? Let's find out together.
"It is extremely unlikely that anyone coming out of school with a technical degree will go into one area and stay there. Today's students have to look forward to the excitement of probably having three or four careers."
The Specialist

They represent a traditional yet continuously relevant professional profile. Specialists possess deep knowledge and a high level of expertise in a specific field.
This could range from cybersecurity, genetic engineering, to niche areas of law or finance. As technology and science advance, the demand for specialists who can navigate complex technical landscapes and provide targeted solutions grows.
In medicine, specialists like neurosurgeons, or endocrinologists play critical roles in delivering healthcare. Their expertise, often honed over many years of education and practice, is crucial in treating conditions that require specific knowledge.
However, specialists must keep pace with rapid advancements in their fields to remain relevant. Continuous learning and adaptation through advanced degrees, certifications, and hands-on experience are essential to maintaining their expertise.
The Generalist

Unlike specialists, generalists possess a broad knowledge base and the ability to work across multiple disciplines. They excel in roles that require adaptability and a big-picture perspective.
Managers, consultants, and entrepreneurs frequently possess a generalist background, allowing them to utilize their diverse skills for driving innovation and overseeing complex projects that involve multiple disciplines.
Generalists thrive in environments that require soft skills as problem-solving, critical thinking, and interpersonal communication. Their ability to adapt quickly and learn on the fly makes them invaluable in industries where company structures and business models are constantly evolving.
The digital age, with its flux of startups and new business models, particularly benefits from generalists. For example, a startup might need someone who can handle business strategy, basic financial forecasting, and human resource management, all roles a generalist could fill.
The Nexialist

Emerging from the blend of the specialist and generalist is the nexialist. They are the link between knowledge and people. They connect the generalists' overview with the detailed opinions of specialists.
Nexialists are adept at integrating knowledge from various disciplines to create novel approaches and solutions. They are the bridge-builders in the professional world, capable of seeing how different areas of expertise align and interact.
Nexialists are particularly suited to roles in innovation management, research and development, and strategic planning. They're natural synthesizers.
They excel in environments where the ability to synthesize information from various fields can lead to breakthrough innovations or solve complex problems. For example, nexialists might integrate data science, urban planning, and environmental science to devise sustainable solutions to tackle climate change problems.
The rise of big data, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary fields like bioinformatics or environmental economics showcases where Nexialist skills are increasing in demand. Their ability to navigate and integrate complex information from multiple domains is a valuable asset.
“Nothing is more creative or destructive than a brilliant mind with a purpose.”
Adaptability Challenges
We all live in a liquid world. How can we adapt to an ever-changing environment? All three profiles face the challenge of adaptability in different ways.
For specialists, the rapid pace of technological and methodological innovations means they must continually update their skills.
The challenge for generalists lies in staying relevant and effective across a broad spectrum of tasks and projects, adapting to new roles as industries evolve.
Nexialists must be adept at learning and integrating new knowledge constantly, making connections across a widening array of disciplines.
The modern workplace demands flexibility and a willingness to learn. If we don't adapt, we are out of the game, out of the market.
The digital transformation, the rise of remote working, and the global integration of markets require professionals who can not only adapt to new technologies but also navigate diverse cultural and economic landscapes.
Adaptability is further needed by the unpredictable swings in global economics and politics, which can disrupt markets and entire industries.
“You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.”
Conclusion
As we look to the future, the lines between the specialist, generalist, and nexialist will blur, creating new opportunities for professionals who can adapt to and thrive in a dynamic world.
Education systems and training programs will need to evolve to equip future professionals with the skills required to navigate these complexities. For those preparing for a career in any field, embracing a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability will be the key to success.
Understanding and developing the skills associated with these profiles not only prepares individuals for the future but also empowers businesses and organizations to innovate and thrive in an ever-changing global landscape.
The professionals of the future will be those who can anticipate change, adapt swiftly, and seize opportunities across the broad spectrum of global challenges and possibilities.
I have an advice for you: be thirsty, stay curious, and take action.
Talk to you next week.
Light and peace,
—FMV
