Far Beyond Money

Health: The Foundation of True Wealth

The alarm clock goes off at 6:15 AM. You wake up and have your day all figured out:

  • 6:30 AM: shower.

  • 6:40 AM: breakfast.

  • 6:45 AM: get dressed.

  • 7:00 AM: you’re off to work.

  • 7:30 AM: wait for the train/bus.

  • 8:00 AM: medical check-up booked months prior.

  • 8:45 AM: walk to the workplace that is a few blocks away.

  • 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM: meetings and work on your assignments.

  • 6:00 PM: arrival back home and dinner with family.

  • 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM: relax, exercises, read.

  • 11:30 PM: sleep time.

So far, nothing extraordinary. It seemed to be another typical workday, but one detail would change your entire day and weeks ahead. You were not expecting to end up in the hospital for a blood transfusion, right? Neither did I. What a surprise! But it happened to me.

While society ties happiness with material wealth, true contentment stems from the priceless treasures of health, love, and purpose. These elements are the building blocks of lasting happiness and surpass the temporary gratification material things can provide.

My first hike ever - I needed a new pair of shoes after this 20km trek

Life doesn’t come with an instruction manual and that’s great. Otherwise, our daily lives would be very predictable. However, only a few know how to live with the sudden changes, uncertainties and learning that it provides us. And to deal with the ups and downs of life, we need to take care of our health - physical, mental, and social well-being.

Investing in health through proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and mental health care is essential, yet the ultimate state of our health is not something that we can buy. It’s a result of daily habits, environmental factors, and genetics.

The richest people in the world may have access to the best medical care, but if they neglect their health or suffer from conditions that money cannot fix, their material wealth becomes irrelevant.

In contrast, people with modest means can experience rich well-being if they maintain their health through conscientious lifestyle choices.

Do you listen to your body? Do you know when to stop or pause? Look inside, truly listen and understand what is happening before you move forward. There is no personal and professional development without health. That’s the first wealth money can’t buy.

“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Love: The Priceless Currency of Connection

Our relationships play a big role in our overall well-being, as I explored here. Love, in its myriad forms, represents a profound aspect of wealth that remains untouched by monetary influence. It is the emotional bond that connects us to family, friends, romantic partners, and even to humanity at large.

Love enriches our lives, providing comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging. It’s a force that can heal wounds, bridge divides, and inspire sacrifices. While money can buy material possessions, we earn and nurture love through trust, empathy, and commitment.

The unbridled pursuit of material wealth can sometimes lead to the neglect of personal relationships, causing a poverty of emotional connection that no amount of money can save us from.

We find true wealth in the depth of our relationships and the love we share and receive. This form of wealth grows through giving, not accumulation, and its value is immeasurable. In moments of triumph or despair, it’s the love we have in our lives that stands as the ultimate support system, not our financial status.

A delicious breakfast

Picture this. You wake up and your favorite breakfast combo is ready. You come back home from a week abroad and there is homemade pizza with your favorite topping. Or you get that special message or phone call after your first surgery ever.

What about that letter you received from your family members the day you were discharged from hospital? Do you recall those priceless moments at the airport or bus station when people were waiting for your arrival? Bingo! That’s the second wealth money can’t buy.

“The real measure of our wealth is how much we’d be worth if we lost all our money.”

John Henry Jowett - British Preacher

Purpose: The Quest for Meaning Beyond Material

What is your purpose in life? Mine is self-mastery.

Purpose gives our lives direction and meaning. It’s what motivates us to rise each morning and pursue goals beyond mere survival or the accumulation of wealth.

Finding purpose is a journey that involves understanding what truly matters to us, what we are passionate about, and how we can contribute to the world. This sense of purpose can manifest in various ways, from raising a family, contributing to a community, creating art, to solving societal challenges.

Finding purpose is a deeply personal quest that external achievements and possessions cannot fulfill. It requires introspection, self-reflection, and a willingness to explore your core values, passions, and talents.

A person may be rich, yet feel empty if they lack a sense of purpose. However, people with modest financial means often lead richly fulfilling lives, driven by a clear sense of purpose that guides their actions and decisions.

I used to celebrate my payday and treat myself. But, after a while, I lost meaning in what I was doing. Payday no longer mattered to me.

Living a purpose-driven life brings fulfillment and contentment that surpasses the temporary pleasures of material success. It imbues life with a sense of significance and contribution, making each moment valuable and every effort meaningful.

Do you know that force that makes you wake up every morning fired up to do your thing? It does not matter if you’re tired or not, you’re in the mood or not, if it’s raining or not. You do it regardless of the external circumstances. That’s the third wealth money can’t buy.

“Ordinary people pursue money, simple people pursue power, average people pursue fame, but extraordinary people pursue ideas.”

Matshona Dhliwayo - Author and Philosopher

Conclusion

Appreciating the sunset in Brazil

Integrating health, love, and purpose into our lives creates a synergy that amplifies the value of each. Here are my takeaways:

  1. A healthy individual is better positioned to cultivate meaningful relationships and pursue their purpose with vigor.

  2. Love and social connections can provide the support and motivation needed to overcome health challenges and engage with our purpose more fully.

  3. A clear sense of purpose can inspire healthier lifestyle choices and deepen our capacity for love, as it aligns actions with personal values and goals.

Adopt a holistic sense of wealth that encompasses well-being, connection, and meaning. Shift the focus from external achievements and possessions to the intrinsic values that offer lasting satisfaction and joy.

In the relentless chase for material wealth, we often overlook the true forms of wealth that money can’t buy: health, love, and purpose. These three invaluable assets offer a more profound sense of fulfillment, happiness, and well-being than any material possession ever could.

The essence of a rich life lies not in what we own, but in how we live, whom we love, and why we wake up each day. By prioritizing these forms of wealth, we can cultivate a life of true abundance, marked by vibrant health, deep connections, and a clear sense of purpose.

Take a moment to reflect. What do you care about? Health, family, community, career, fun? What is the wealth you have right now that money can't buy? It seems cliche what I will say. But, if you’re reading this article, you probably have a rich life. You just did not recognize yet. My last two words: be grateful.

“True wealth is not measured in money or status or power. It’s measured in the legacy we leave behind for those we love and those we inspire.”

Cesar Chavez - American Civil Rights Activist

Talk to you next week.

Light and peace,
